Reacting to urgent requests for food assistance is what we at the Food Bank of South Jersey are here to do for our community. When we receive a phone call, an email, or meet someone in desperate need of assistance, we get to work because that’s what we do.
Each of these requests is a stark reminder of the harsh realities that thousands of our neighbors face every day. But a recent email subject line caught our team off guard. A single mother requesting food for her two children explained her story of hardship and why something as seemingly simple as supplying food for her children is a source of constant worry.

Subject: FOOD FOR MY CHILDREN
I am currently looking for assistance for my two children and me through the TANF program. I am a single mother and a stage four breast cancer survivor with many medical problems from my cancer treatments which prevents me from keeping a steady job. I do not receive help currently and in two weeks, I’ll be heading into the hospital for another major surgery.
My daughter usually gets free lunches at school and I am worried about how I am going to feed her and my autistic son during the summer. I saw on the news tonight that you have a lunch program to help families in need. Can you give me more information about that? Do I need to drive somewhere? I’m told with the surgery that I’ll be unable to drive for about three to four weeks.
Thank you for your help.
We’re happy to report that we are able to help this mother in need, but helping her requires YOUR support!
