Mission Statement

The Food Bank of South Jersey exists to provide an immediate solution to the urgent problem of hunger by providing food to needy people, teaching them to eat nutritiously, and helping them to find sustainable ways to improve their lives.

Who We Are

The Food Bank of South Jersey (FBSJ) operates on one simple premise: food should not be wasted when hungry people are in our midst. From this truth, it has built an effective food distribution program that annually links over 10 million pounds of food with more than 200 charitable food providers, such as food pantries, soup kitchens and emergency shelters.

The Food Bank of South Jersey is a member of Feeding America™, formally named America's Second Harvest, the Nation's Food Bank Network™ and the largest domestic hunger relief organization. The Food Bank of South Jersey is an affiliate partner of United Way Burlington, Camden, Gloucester counties and other United Ways throughout the Delaware Region.

The Food Bank of South Jersey is the largest source of government and non-government food assistance in South Jersey. We are the only major agency in South Jersey whose mission is to eliminate hunger and malnutrition by ensuring that wholesome surplus food  reaches people in need. Our centralized food donation and distribution system is a vital community link ensuring that low-income and disadvantaged residents can access free groceries and wholesome meals from a charitable food provider in their neighborhood.

Now in our 26th year of community service, the FBSJ continues to serve as an agent for effective food rescue and charitable food distribution in southern New Jersey. Since our inception, we have provided more than 100 million pounds of food--the equivalent of 76 million meals--to thousands of families, seniors, individuals, and children in need.

Seven Core Values drive our operations and relationships:

    Collaboration - we believe in the power of the community. We collaborate and build strong relationships, based on trust with those who share our vision of creating a hunger-free South Jersey.

    Urgency - we operate with an acute sense of urgency that reflects the immediate needs of hungry people. We challenge our employees, volunteers and partners to embrace the same urgency to accomplish our shared vision.

    Service - we believe service is fundamental to creating a hunger-free South Jersey. We serve with excellence, compassion, and responsiveness to meet the needs of those with whom we work, internally and externally. The better we serve, the more people we bring together in commitment to our vision.

    Integrity - we act with honesty, trust, and openness and deliver on commitments. We act within the spirit of agreements, contracts, and the law. Our intention and actions will be transparent and above reproach.

    Diversity - we believe that the ethnic, cultural, and social diversity of our nation should be reflected in our staff and board.
