The Food Bank of South Jersey was started by a group of dedicated volunteers, and today volunteers continue to help us feed hungry people in South Jersey. Over 5,800 people have joined us in our mission to help people in need.
We accept individuals, families, groups, and those needing to fulfill required or community service hours. All volunteers must be scheduled in advance. No volunteer opportunities are currently offered on weekends or evenings. Volunteers must be over 13 and volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Individuals and families must attend a mandatory volunteer orientation.

Orientations are held at our offices at 1501 John Tipton Blvd in Pennsauken on the second Wednesday of every month at 6pm and last about an hour. These informal meetings are meant to familiarize our volunteers with warehouse logistics and the various positions we have available. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes with a closed toe (very important!). If you cannot make it to a scheduled orientation, just call Mike Kneble, Community Engagement Coordinator, at (856) 662-4884, ext 160. Please note that space is limited to 40 people for orientations. You must RSVP to an orientation prior to the training.
If you are bringing children 15 years or younger, you must apply as a family. Anyone 16 or older may apply as an individual and come by themselves.
Food Bank of South Jersey offers groups a remarkable team-building program that can be customized to your needs. Corporate groups as well as Scout troops, school, camp, church and civic groups are all an important part of our volunteer community.
Our Community Engagement Manager will call to review your needs so that we can put together the right program for your team.
The Community Engagement Manager will run and supervise each customized program, encourage communications between your team & our organization, and establish an ongoing connection with team members who may want to continue their relationship with us in an ongoing manner.
Currently, FBSJ offers groups:
- a team-building volunteer activity that focuses on communication & cooperation
- a FBSJ tour
Group volunteer activities depend on the day's operational needs. Volunteers typically sort donated food to eliminate products that are no longer safe to eat, or pack food packages distributed through various Food Bank of South Jersey direct services.
The Community Engagement Coordinator will conduct a comprehensive educational tour so employees can get a deeper sense of who we are, what we do, and how we work to achieve our mission. The tour will reveal the inner workings of the food bank and give employees an insider's perspective.
To schedule your customized volunteer experience, please contact Sabine Mehnert, Community Engagement Manager, at (856) 662-4884 x145.
Volunteering at the Food Bank of South Jersey is a great way for your company to increase employee morale, reach out to your community, and help end hunger in South Jersey. Corporate volunteer teams help sort, stock and pack thousands of pounds of food for us throughout the year.
To volunteer as a corporate group, comple our group application as well as group member sign in. Be sure to include your email address. Once your application is received, you will be contacted via email to schedule a volunteer workday. It will include a tour of the Food Bank. Please plan to schedule 2-3 months in advance, as space for groups is limited.
