FBSJ Health Living Initiative:
Proven Better Health for People of All Ages
The Food Bank of South Jersey’s Healthy Living Initiative incorporates several programs that all serve to increase healthy eating behaviors and self-sufficiency in the South Jersey community. The initiative currently includes cooking demos, FBSJ Wonder Chefs courses for toddlers, a baking addendum, and Cooking Matters (a Share Our Strength program).
The Rutgers University’s Rand Institute for Public Affairs confirms that FBSJ’s Healthy Living Initiative has been successful in ensuring nutritional sustainability. You can read the full report at www.foodbanksj.org/walterrand.
Over the span of four weeks, children who take our Wonder Chefs course use fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products and whole grains as a means to exercise their math, reading and fine & gross motor skills. Wonder Chefs may be offered in early childhood learning centers and preschool classrooms.
Healthy Living Initiative activities are taught by a network of volunteers who share their love for healthy and delicious food with South Jersey residents. Cooking Matters is a nutrition education program that fights childhood hunger by teaching families how to make healthy and budget-wise food choices. With six different courses that target adults, teens and children, Cooking Matters takes a cooking-centered approach to nutrition education. It brings children and adults in touch with food and health in a long-lasting manner.
