CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Valerie Brown Traore
As the CEO of Food Bank of South Jersey, Val has overall responsibility
for the strategic, programmatic, financial, and management operations
of the organization. She leads the communication of the vision
and program objectives to internal and external constituencies and
works collaboratively with the Board in formulating policies, developing
strategies, raising funds, and achieving performance. Since
her arrival in 2006, Val has doubled the organization’s revenue
base, significantly expanded its core programming and has uniquely
position the organization for its next stage of growth.
Val’s background in the nonprofit sector is extensive. She has more than
20 years nonprofit leadership experience working at hunger-relief organizations
in Baltimore, Chicago and New York. Her previous position was as Director of
Agency Relations for City Harvest, Inc. based in New York City. In this
capacity, Val had direct responsibility for developing and maintaining a network
of more than 800 charitable feeding programs throughout New York City. Additionally
she created several successful programs including the phenomenal Mobile Market,
which increased the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in economically
disadvantaged communities.
Prior to City Harvest, Val worked for Feeding America: The Nation’s Food
Bank Network based in Chicago, IL. In her role there, Val traveled extensively
throughout the country advising food banks and food rescue organizations in areas
of strategic development, organizational management, board relations, financial
management and facilities management. Val’s other management
positions were at several nonprofit organizations in her hometown
of Baltimore, Maryland. She holds a B.S. in Management from Coppin
State University and is currently a graduate student at Rowan University
studying for an MBA in Strategic Management.

is married to Brehima Traore and has one son, Dean.
