FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

Volunteers must be over 8 years of age and children 15 and under must be accompanied by a parent when volunteering at the Food Bank of South Jersey.

Can I bring my kids?

Yes, as long as they are 8 years or older.

How much of a time commitment do you require?

You can volunteer as often or seldom as you like. Some volunteers come in weekly or bi-weekly, others only occasionally. Certain volunteer jobs do require a regular time commitment; these will be explained in more detail at orientation.

How long is a work shift?

We ask that you work at least a 3 hour shift.

Is orientation mandatory?

Yes, it is mandatory for all volunteers except for large groups, such as corporate groups or scout troops. Because of their large number, they are given a tour and training as part of their visit in lieu of orientation.

Do I have to schedule in advance?

Yes, all volunteers must make an appointment in advance with the Volunteer Coordinator. No walk-ins are allowed.

How do I make a volunteer appointment?

Contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@foodbanksj.org or 856 662-4884 to make an appointment.

What hours are you open for volunteers?

That depends on the jobs you do. In general, we are open M-F from 9 am to 3:30 pm for volunteers in our warehouse, and 9 am to 4:30 pm for volunteers in our office. Our volunteer Transportation Assistants need to arrive at 7:30 am to go out with the trucks. We have occasional special events that may require weekend or evening hours.

Is there a dress code?

Yes. The most important thing is you must wear closed toed shoes, such as sneakers, to work in the warehouse; flip-flops and sandals are not allowed. Dress is casual – in the summer, the warehouse can get hot and stuffy, so wear a comfortable t shirt and knee length shorts; in the winter, the warehouse can get cold, so dress accordingly – a comfortable sweatshirt and long pants are recommended.

Are you open on weekends or evenings?

We are not open weekends or evenings, but there are occasional exceptions.

Is there parking?

Yes, there is a parking lot in front of the Food Bank.

Can you give me directions?

Our address is 1501 John Tipton Blvd., Pennsauken, NJ. Click here for directions.

Can I bring food or drink?

Food and drink are not allowed in the warehouse for health code reasons. You are welcome to bring a drink and/or snack to store in our kitchen area, and enjoy in our break area.

Can I bring my iPod?

For safety reasons, iPods, MP3 players, and other electronic devices such as hand-held games are not allowed in our warehouse.

Will I have to lift heavy objects?

In general, no, but there are some volunteer jobs, such as Transportation Assistant, that require lifting and moving heavy objects. If you have any physical limitations, please note that on your volunteer application.

Is the Food Bank air conditioned?

Our offices are air conditioned, but our warehouse is not. It can get hot and stuffy in the summer and cold in the winter, so dress accordingly.
