Stress LESS this Holiday Season With these 5 Tips

Stress LESS this Holiday Season With these 5 Tips

This time of year should be filled with wonder and joy, not stress and frustration. While finding the perfect gift, baking traditional treats and visiting family is important, it shouldn’t make your anxiety level skyrocket. The Food Bank of South Jersey offers these tips to help you stress less this holiday season.

  1. Make A Plan
With the never-ending holiday to-do list, it can get really chaotic really fast. Make sure you’re organized by creating shopping lists for loved ones, items you need or specific stores you need to visit. Schedule your day to allow yourself enough time to go shopping, bake and spend time with your family. Making a plan also includes sticking to a budget. Money can stress you out any day, but during the holidays, it can go to another level. Set aside funds for gifts, groceries and other things that need to be purchased. Take charge and make a plan!
  2. It’s OKAY to say NO
You can’t do everything and that’s okay. You’re already  searching for perfect gifts, cooking and baking, and trying to make lasting memories with your family, not to mention the everyday tasks that need to get done. Stretching yourself too thin isn’t healthy and will leave you exhausted and frustrated. It’s okay to say “Not this year” and focus on the things that really matter.
  3. Take a Break
Whether it’s going for a run, taking a bubble bath or just sitting down with a hot cup of tea, do something that is healthy and relaxing. Make time for yourself to slow your breathing and clear your mind.
  4. Give Back
Studies show that doing a selfless action can reduce stress, increase happiness and decrease symptoms of depression. Consider helping the Food Bank of South Jersey in the following ways. Visit your local Dunkin Donuts to surprise someone with a Lg Hot Coffee using your DD App. A portion of the proceeds will go toward fighting hunger in South Jersey. Host a food drive to collect essential holiday meal items for families across South Jersey that are in need. Start a Facebook Fundraiser to encourage your family and friends to give to those who need it most this holiday season. Giving back helps your community and your mental health. Visit foodbanksj.org/31Days to learn more ways to make this holiday hunger-free.
  5. Seek Help and Support
You don’t have to take on all the holiday challenges by yourself. Enlist family and friends to take some things off your plate or simply just voice your concerns. Release the pressure you feel by talking with someone you trust like a spouse or friend or seek a professional that can help you work through your feelings so you can find peace when things get overwhelming. If you or someone you know needs food assistance, look no further. The Food Bank of South Jersey is here to help. Visit foodbanksj.org/zip-code-locator to find food distributions near you or message us on Facebook!

If you feel the pressure of the holidays getting to you stop and make a plan, say no if you have to, take a break, give back or seek help. Enjoy these precious moments with your family and friends. From everyone at the Food Bank of South Jersey, have a HEALTHY holiday season!
