The Food Bank of South Jersey (FBSJ) recently kicked off its Summer Meals program with a Kidsfest event at Wiggins Park in Camden.
“While most children look forward to a care-free and fun-filled summer, it’s a different story for others who face hunger,” says Fred Wasiak, President & CEO, FBSJ. “In South Jersey alone, there are 57,000 food-insecure children. Our Summer Meals program was created to take some of the burden of replacing the free and reduced meals that children receive during the school year.”
The Summer Meals program provides children in Burlington, Camden, Salem and Gloucester counties with fresh and nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 10 weeks in the summer. As part of Kidsfest, children in the Summer Meals program received their first summer meal.
“Aside from giving children their first meal from the program, we wanted to make sure they had a day of fun as well,” says Wasiak. “Our sponsors really stepped up and helped us give the kids a summer memory they won’t forget.”
Activities at Kidsfest included yard games and sports, hula hooping, a water balloon toss, a DJ, Puddles Water Truck, water activities sponsored by New Jersey American Water and more kid-friendly fun.
Since its inception in 2010, the FBSJ’s Summer Meals program has provided nearly one million meals to thousands of children. The Food Bank of South Jersey has received recognition for its Summer Meals program including a Champion of Feeding Certificate from the State of New Jersey Department of Agriculture.
