Let’s Bag Food Insecurity– Help Feed our South Jersey Neighbors, Not Landfills

On May 4, 2022, New Jersey’s plastic bag ban went into effect. Though a positive change for all of us and our beautiful state, this will be a large shift for us at FBSJ and our partner food agencies. Bags are used to easily and efficiently distribute essential items to our neighbors in need. Each year, we hand out more than 80,000 bags of groceries that’s a LOT of bags!

The Food Bank of South Jersey supports the bag ban as an important move towards environmental sustainability. However, as bags are so crucial to how we get items to food-insecure families. Over the coming months, we’ll be looking for help in securing reusable bags for our 200+ partner agencies for our joint outreach to individuals in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem counties.  We are sure our incredible community will aid us in meeting the needs of our neighbors now and into the future!

How you can help:

  • When you buy a bag for you, buy one for us! You can donate the bags to a local pantry or drop them off at one of our community partners listed below
  • Donate to FBSJ so that we can purchase bags for our partners

How do I clean my reusable shopping bags?

While we appreciate new bags, we will accept like-new bags that have been sanitized. Here are the best ways you can clean used bags, based on the material of which they are made:

  • Woven or nonwoven polypropylene bags: Machine wash on a gentle cycle with soap — not detergent — and cold water. Or hand wash in your kitchen or bathroom sink with soap and water. Skip the dryer and instead hang or line dry.
  • Nylon or polyester: Hand wash in warm water with soap, not detergent. Turn the bag inside out and line dry.
  • Bamboo or hemp bags: Launder on a gentle cycle with mild detergent or soap, or hand wash. Machine or hang dry.
  • Cotton bags: Launder with hot water and your normal detergent, or hand wash. Machine or hang dry.
  • Insulated bags: Hand wash with soap and warm water — don’t forget the inner and outer seams. Wipe with disinfecting wipes. Hang dry.

You can also use disinfecting wipes or sprays to clean bags. You can normally determine the material of the bag by some form of manufacturer tag.
